  27 Jul 2013

Introduction to the problem

How to Treat Jaundice in Newborns Jaundice is mostly found in new born babies and it is not something new. This condition is very common in most babies but proper care should be taken so that, the condition does not become worse. It is essential for a mother to know what causes jaundice in newborns. Jaundice in newborn is mostly caused by high levels of bilirubin in the blood and this makes white eyes of the baby to look yellowish. Bilirubin is formed in the body due to the break down of red cells in the blood.

Types of Jaundice

There are different types of jaundice in newborns, some of the most popular ones are mentioned below.

Breastfeeding jaundice

This type of newborn jaundice is mostly caused, if the mother does not breastfeed the baby with enough milk. Breastfeeding jaundice is not caused by the problem of breastfeeding but if the baby does not breastfeed enough.

Jaundice of prematurity

This type of newborn jaundice occurs mostly in premature new born babies because the babies are inefficient to excrete bilirubin effectively. This condition should be treated at lower bilirubin levels, to avoid other health complications to occur.

Physiological jaundice

This type of Jaundice is also referred to as normal jaundice and it occurs in most new born babies because of their immaturity of the baby liver, which makes the liver to process bilirubin very slowly. It appears two to four days after the baby is born and later disappears after one or two weeks.

Causes of Jaundice

There are various factors that cause jaundice in newborn babies. One of the most popular causes of newborn jaundice is overfeeding, the baby with breast milk. The liver of a baby cannot be able to cope with the enzymes, present in the breast milk because the liver is very small. Other causes of jaundice include diseases such as anemia as well as a defect in the liver. It does not matter what caused jaundice in newborns, this condition it is possible to treat this condition naturally.

Symptoms of Jaundice in Newborns

Jaundice in newborns appears two or three days, after the baby is born. It starts from the head of the new born and moves downwards. A jaundiced new born baby skin appears yellow on the face, then on the chest, stomach and the legs. It also makes the white portion of the new born baby eye to appear yellow.

Is there any difference between jaundice in newborns and jaundice in adults?

There is no difference at all. The difference is that, jaundice in adults is caused because of a poor diet or alcohol. In babies, it is caused by overfeeding, the baby with breast milk. One thing that you need to know about jaundice is that, removing what causes jaundice in newborns is not going to stop jaundice; this is because the liver has already been damaged. But, in adults there is a natural way that you can treat jaundice. In adults, the condition can be treated, if the body is supplied with the right tools so that it fixes the disease and control bilirubin levels. Jaundice can be eliminated quickly in the baby, if the baby is supplied with the right nutrients and tools.

Treatment of Jaundice

When it comes to newborn jaundice treatment, natural treatment is the most effective way of treating jaundice. This is because it is a disease that your body requires to eliminate it. It is not good to treat jaundice through medication because it will make the condition worse. One of the most effective ways of treating this condition is through phototherapy. The reason why this treatment is effective is because light, has the ability to break serum bilirubin and then flush it out. The benefit of this newborn jaundice treatment is that, it is not painful. During treatment, your new born baby might be dehydrated, therefore extra feeds are recommended. Phototherapy is stopped if only, the bilirubin levels decline to safe levels. If the doctor, advised you that you should sunbathe your newborn baby to indirect sunlight for more than thirty minutes this is not the best option because the skin of the baby is very soft. Therefore, it is advisable to expose your new born baby to the sun but only in the morning hours because during this time the heat is less. When sunbathing, it is essential to shield his eyes and turn the baby after every five minutes.

Phototherapy is safe but it has side effects like skin rash or loose bowel movements. Dehydration can also happen if the new born baby is not getting enough milk to breast feed. Infants, who are receiving phototherapy it is important for them to drink adequate fluids.

Btw, there are no clear interrelations between neonatal jaundice and death. Having said that, high levels of bilirubin can lead to kernicterus. Kernicterus, which is a type of brain damage, is thought to increase the risk of death in infants.
