Cytomegalovirus: Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

What is Cytomegalovirus infection

Cytomegalovirus: symptoms, diagnosis and treatment Cytomegalovirus or CMV is a virus from herpes family that spread from various resources including blood, saliva, semen, breast milk and urine. It seems after finding the primary infection normally in form of a latent in numerous tissues, for instance, liver, kidney and lungs. Research shows that one percent of newly born babies are having CMV. This virus is famous with the name Human Herpes virus 5 or HHV-5. Transmission of Cytomegalovirus is very common during the perintal period and in childhood. Transmission of this virus can also occur with sexual relation and transfusion of blood. A person may cause illness in patients who are already infected by immunodeficiency virus (HIV). CMV transfers from one person to another though close contacts of bodies. Some, it can also transmit through sneezes and coughs. Symptoms of CMV infection are rare and most people having Cytomegalovirus even don’t know that they have this infection. There might appear few complications if you are also pregnant and sometimes it may develop fetus or affect the immune system.

Cytomegalovirus symptoms

If a newly born baby is infected with Cytomegalovirus develop various symptoms when they get this infection. It seemed that newly born babies who become patient of CMV through breast feeding, and people having weakened immune system face more risks to develop various symptoms and signs as compared to healthy young people. If a woman is pregnant and become CMV patient, she can transmit this disease into her baby also. If you are first time infected with CMV then the risk of transferring virus in baby is even higher than if it is involved with the reactivated infection. Most babies infected with CMV appear health at the time of birth, but eventually after passing months or even year, they start developing signs for CMV infection. One of the most common cytomegalovirus symptoms found in majority of the babies is loss of hearing. Some babies may also get impairment of vision.

Babies infected with CMV eventually become very weak. Symptoms of cytomegalovirus in babies include:

  • Pale eyes and yellow skin;
  • Purple skin spot or rash;
  • Small in size or loss weight;
  • Enlarge glandular;
  • Seizures;
  • Pneumonia.

There are numerous infections related to HMV present in people having very weak immune system. In young people, this virus can directly damage the specific organs of your body. CMV virus symptoms in young people are as follows:

  • They can completely loss their sight (blindness and visual impairment);
  • Some people might have pneumonia with this infection;
  • Diarrhea problem is also very common;
  • Ulcers found in digestive area and might cause bleeding;
  • Inflammation of brain, also called encephalitis;
  • Hepatitis;
  • Changes in different behaviors;
  • Coma;
  • Seizures;

When adults become CMV infectious, they may get similar symptoms like mononucleosis such as high fever all the time, muscle aches and fatigue.

Cytomegalovirus diagnosis

There are several methods that are used for the assessments of various diagnostics. In past days, the major stone to diagnose the infections of CMV was serologic testing. In current technology, doctors found molecular amplification methods. They are considered the best tools for cytomegalovirus diagnosis in body of patients.

Purpose of Serology is to show the indirect diagnosis of CMV infection depending on the changes take place in antibody titers on several different points during illness. There are bundles of different techniques that can easily diagnose the CMV infection. These antibody detection techniques are enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), complement-fixation techniques, indirect hemagglutination assays and latex agglutination. Advance medical technology has also introduced the liquid phase systems of luciferase immunoprecipitation in order to provide the assessments for the antibodies related to anti-CMV infection.

Cytomegalovirus treatment

If you are infected with CMV virus for the first time then painkillers are good for you that you can get from the pharmacies like ibuprofen and paracetamol. These painkillers can stop the symptoms of illness and pain in different parts of a patient’s body. if a children below 16 years is infected with HMV then aspirin is right option. For cytomegalovirus treatment, you can drink several glasses of water in a day and take fresh fruit juices that will help you to reduce few other symptoms of CMV such as sore throat, high fever and dehydration. If your baby is born with congenital cytomegalovirus, then you should consult your doctor before starting treatment by yourself.

Congenital CMV that occurs because of weak immune system can be handled through antiviral medicines. Basically, these medicines cannot eliminate the congenital CMV infection from your body, but they can slow down the infection process.

Antiviral medicines such as Ganciclovir are used for the treatment of CMV infection. Please note it is not right treatment for cmv pregnancy. So if you are pregnant, you should adopt some other procedures to cure HMV infections.
